Chapter 9

Brody’d been out for the last four hours, as Clary sat by his bedside, wondering about keeping him under for more time but figured he would probably just be even more pissed.

When the door opened, and Terk walked in, he raised an eyebrow and whispered, “How is he doing?”

“Healing,” Clary replied shortly. “Although he’s definitely trying to find his way out. He is restless and trying to resurface.” Terk frowned at that, and she confirmed what they both knew to be true. “He’s stubborn, cranky, and always wants to be part of the action.”

Terk looked up, and his grin flashed. “I can’t really blame him for that either. Listen. I really appreciate what you’re doing.”

She nodded. “You do, but he doesn’t.”

“And that public conversation out there was intended to do what?”

“Put him on notice,” she stated. “And help everybody else understand what a gift they have.”

“Yet you’re afraid you don’t have the same gift?”

“The thing is, I really do,” she noted. “I’m not sure how I’ll separate from him, but I promise you, I will.” She said it with more determination in her voice, even though she didn’t know how to handle it. “I can’t live connected but not connected fully. That’s not who I am. At some point in time, he’ll have to make a decision too. But this just isn’t the time. He hasn’t a clue whether he’s coming or going yet, and I think he feels, in some way, like he’s being manipulated.”

Terk sucked in his breath and then slowly nodded. “I can’t blame him for that. I can see how he would potentially feel that way.”

“Well, you can explain it to him when he gets here,” she suggested, with half a smile. “Right now he just needs to heal. I’m not keeping him under now. I was,” she admitted, “but now I’m slowly letting him resurface.”

“Good,” Terk replied, “and I think you’re right. I think he would hate to know that you had that much control over him.”

“He already knows it, and he already hates it,” she stated, “but that doesn’t change the fact that he is incapable of being on his own yet. And, when I withdrew my energy, as I recently did, he got the first warning of it.”

“I don’t think he thought much of that either.” Terk smiled.

“Of course not. We always like to think we’re invincible. Maybe he’ll be that way again, and maybe he won’t, but, in the meantime, he needs to get enough energy back so that he can stand on his own two feet. That means not doing anything to overexert himself and definitely not draining energy from other people as fast as he is doing right now.”

Terk looked at her sharply.

“And, yes, I can see him pulling on you too,” she said. “He’s a very determined person, and you’ve taught them well. At the same time, he needs to know his own boundaries in terms of his physical health.”

“None of us like hearing that,” Terk admitted, smiling.

“No, and, at some point in time”—she stared at him—“you’ll drop too.
